Stroke Clinic
Stroke rehabilitation is a program of different therapies designed to help you relearn or re-educate skills lost after a stroke. Depending on the parts of your brain that are affected by the stroke, rehabilitation can help with movement, speech, strength and daily living skills. Stroke rehabilitation can help you regain independence and improve your quality of life.
There’s a wide range of complications from stroke — and how well each person recovers afterwards. Researchers have found that people who participate in a focused stroke rehabilitation program perform better than most people who don’t have stroke rehabilitation. Therefore, stroke rehabilitation is recommended for all people affected by stroke.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Rehab
Rehabilitation is a therapy to maintain or improve your function and quality of life.
You work in partnership with a health professional to improve your physical function, comfort and quality of life. MS may provide you with a variety of physical, psychological or social complications, but with the help of rehabilitation specialists, you should be able to live your life as fully as possible. If your MS symptoms make everyday activities such as dressing, work, leisure or communication difficult, you can discuss it with our Therapist, your GP or your neurologist. They can refer you to rehabilitation services or contact us at Letchworth Rehabilitation & Physiotherapy Centre.
Neurological rehabilitation refers to the specific area of supporting people with neurological problems. Specialists will see people with a variety of different diagnoses, but who often experience very similar problems such as fatigue, spasticity, pain, bladder symptoms or impaired memory or cognition.
Everyone’s experience of MS is different, and you may see rehabilitation specialists that other people with MS do not. Your programme of rehabilitation may take place in various places, such as in your home, in a hospital or at Letchworth Rehabilitation & Physiotherapy Centre. You should feel free to contact us or discuss your goals and ensure that your rehabilitation is tailored to meet your health needs.
Standing Frame Services
At LRPC we have a Standing frame and a Tilt Table which helps Wheelchair users to stand which has so many benefits. A lot of work has been done around using standing frames to allow to stand when they lack the control to do so unaided. There are many areas of development, which can be influenced by regular standing.
Benefits of Standing Frame service:
1. Bone Density
Help increase bone density and reduces osteoporosis. It may help develop deeper hip sockets and reduce the risk of dislocation. It may influence the progress of scoliosis.
2. Muscle Length
Help maintains muscle length by gently stretching, and giving the experience of an upright posture. It will also stimulate the muscles that are necessary for standing.
3. Eating and Drinking
The improved alignment in standing can result in more effective swallowing patterns, which will in turn influence other problems associated with eating and drinking, such as reflux and constipation. This should be discussed with your Speech and Language Therapist or contact us.
4. Fine Motor Skills
The improved posture and stability gained by using a standing frame can result in better fine motor skills and communication.
5. Bowel and Bladder Function
Fewer bladder infections and improved bowel regularity can be achieved by regular standing. The upright position can allow the bladder to fill more fully and empty in larger amounts. Gravity can help bowel movement.
6. Psychological Benefits
People often enjoy standing. It is good to have a change of position and be on a level with their peers. Your Physiotherapist will adjust a standing frame to fit and show you how to put you in and out and achieve the best position.
